The Homeland Aztlan

In this story, we can see the constant struggle and fight over lands and borders. History is written by the winners of the war. We can see that statement hold true especially when it comes to Native Americans and their legacy being lost due to colonization. In this story in particular "The Homeland Aztlan" we follow the changes a certain piece of land has gone under ownership located in Southern Texas. Originally it belonged to the Natives that lived on that land. Eventually, it became Mexican territory due to Spanish colonization and later Mexican independence. Now it belongs to the United States due to Manifest Destiny and the ideology that the U.S. is destined to control most of North America. We can also see how this land can relate to identity as some Indians call themselves Chicanos while others do not. There is a lot of blurred lines and when it comes to identity and ownership of land and this story exemplifies that.

In terms of the art used in your comic, what motivated you to use this specific art style? What made you feel that it would be more effective to your story to use stencil type art style in black and white rather than a more rigid clear cut with color? How closely did you work with your illustrator and how important was that relationship in order to really get your perspective down in the page? How did you get comfortable with the idea of sharing your story to the world?

Latina Experience at Care Work

From this essay by Mary Romero, we can see how the working climate has been changing through the years and how certain demographics ended up being the majority for certain types of jobs. Romero goes over specifically the "care work" field which includes jobs such as nannies, housekeeping, cleaning, etc... Romero also makes connections with the type of women primarily working those jobs based on immigration patterns. We can see how in the North, European immigrants were working these types of jobs until eventually African American and later Latinas would come to dominate.
I like this essay because not only does it go through historical events to detail the changes in the work field, it also analyzes cultural and immigration influences. It even goes on to explain the difference in public opinion on certain jobs and why some workers are shunned. This essay goes beyond to make sure the audience gets the full picture as to why we see trends now and everything that led up to it.
